Tool 10,000 days review
I thought I'd be too old to get excited over a new album, Tools last album Lateralus, left a funny taste in my mouth, I liked a few tracks on the album -- It was meek for a tool fan. But, after five years of nothing from the band, except "A perfect circle", Maynard's solo side project, I welcome the crumbs Tool throws at me. As I listen to 10,000 Days I realize that I am not too old - especially since it's been almost five years coming.
The album is pure, unadulterated, Tool sound, with an exception of "Intension", which, reminds one of "A perfect circle." The sound is familiar as well as fresh at the same time.
Jambi, Vicarious, Right in two, are just awesome, all other songs are presented aesthetically with a mix of heavy and slow Tool-ish music.
Tool fans will not be disappointed. If you are new to Tool, you have to sit down with this album and go through each and every track. 10,000 Days is a wonderful album and if you really listen to it, it will make you think.
Update: More on 10,000 days.
Update 2:
When I first heard Tool, I was 18 and just out of school, a lot of things were happening in life, women, job, the world. And listening to Tool always brought, as silvan said, "the toolish melancholy and subliminal thoroughgoingness." It was a time for learning and growing up, and thanks to tool for making me question realitly and think for myself. It seems like a lot to say about a band, but, I know I haven't said enough. Of-course there were people I met and books I read that helped me be the person I am. But, as far as music goes, Tool does stand out as one of the best things that happened to me.
Secondly, about making fun of Tool fans, Everyone makes fun of them, Its easy to see why, Tool fans are almost religious about the music, I can clearly remember shoving Tool tapes in the hands of everyone I knew, trying to request a tool song in almost every pub I went to. Copying Tool CDs and giving it to DJs. I have done my share of all that, and no I do not make fun of tool fans, because I am one of them. How else would you explain this post?

Nice review
I didn't know if you people knew this. But, If you burn both Viginti Tres followed by Wings for marie .. Then, play that track as one with 10,000 days as another track and play both at the same time, Both Wings for Marie AND 10,000 days sync ! It is incredible ! It is like an 8 piece band but it all FLOWS ! It flows like one song.. It is the most unique and incredible thing I have ever heard in my life.. BadA$$ ! The vocals, drums, the guitar riffs, everything flows ! Both songs get heavy at the same point at 9 minutes and 14 seconds in, it is magical ! This band synched tracks !
They synched them in testament to Maynard's mother passing to sound like an 8 piece band.. The vocals wisp back and forth almost like a conversation during the sync.. It's UNREAL !
Tool meant these tracks to synch.. If you look at the track times, "10,000 days" is 11 mins and 13 seconds long.. When you add the track times of "Viginti Tres" and "Wings for Marie" it adds up to 11:13 as well.. Look at the album cover ! There are 3 faces with one in the front.. This SICK band meant for all three tracks to play as one song for the self-title track "10,000 days" . Freaky !!
By the way, "Viginti Tres" means the number 23 in Latin . 23 is the number of synchronicity . And nothing is more synchronous than hearing the tracks mixed as I described .. Everything Tool writes is for a reason. These aren't merely interludes and fillers this band puts between songs. All their tracks have a meaning and there's a reason why they are there .. They are truly a one of a kind band like no other.
I recommend using a surround sound system for this.. Play 10,000 days in the rear and viginti treS + Wings for Marie in the front.. It's much better than headphones with listening each tune in one ear.. Because you have a fade with headphones.. Ever notice sometimes the bass guitar (or the effects) will only play in one ear with headphones ? And you may have to adjust the bars and volume.. But once you set it right, the sync is undeniable and it is a pure treat .. Well this is what I mean . It must be heard with a surround system . About two minutes in there will be sounds swingin around your head..It is so cosmic and trippy. When it gets heavy at 9 minutes and 14 seconds in, Both songs get heavy at the same point and it sounds like a cohesive 8 piece band. It's crazy ! I havent stopped listening to this musical feast for 3 days now.. This band is SICK SICK SICK !!
Tool, once again, has come up with something totally innovative on an album. A band that is truly unparalleled IMHO. They never disappoint . On the 2001 release Lateralus , they did the infamous fibonacci sequence in the title song.. Tool's Lateralus is the best album front to back I have ever heard, PERIOD.. They are intoxicating once you give them enough time to squeeze into your consciousness. And with hours of straight listening, your flattened.. Because this band is so deep, it takes a long time for you to absorb their musical complexities , waves and textures. But once you absorb them with alot of listens, it is entrenched into your psychy and they are a mad MAD addiction ..
Every album this foursome comes up with has some new mad musical ideas, they are like mad musical scientists .. Here, in 10,000 days they sync three songs , to make it sound like one incredible song ! The only band in history to accomplish this incredible feat on an album.. This band is pure genius. And with every release they never cease to amaze me. For about 10 years now this band has made me just speechless. I have received such pleasures over their sound over the years that I believe these 4 guys who call themselves "Tool" , are really from another planet ... Pure genius . What innovation . What an experience . Album of the year . This is a masterpiece !!!!

Ok review, but it seems the most common things in reviews for this album is making fun of Tool fans and comparing it to Lateralus, neither of which really have anything to do with whether 10,000 days is a good album or not. At least you didn't go for the three part and complain about how ong the songs were.
I *am* a tool fan. What I dont need to make fun of tool fans, look at the comment by anonymous-1.
I like their music ... the way they use sitar and tabla, not just in Lateralus, but, since the beginning ... Anemia, forty six and two. As far as taking them seriously goes, I take them as seriously as I take kiss or marlyn manson, which is not very seriously.

from a friend:
while listening to it, the backflash
to evenings with chips and coke in sarai's
garage immediately set in :)
So much happened in the meantime, thinking
one has passed the Tool phase long time ago,
Maynard and his colleagues easily manage
to rekindle that toolish melancholy and subliminal
thoroughgoingness ... My faves so far: Vicarious
and Jambi ... (i think the Bassplayer became faster
and more virtous over the years).

tool is a band that i first heard when i was 16 tripping acid which dosnt help the dorky tool fan presona but since the very first time untill now, seven years later, i'v been completely captivatied by its mysterious and emotional music. it is healing and helps you look at yourself and try to understand things about your personal environment. i can only speak for myself but i say these four guys are making beautiful, intelectual music that has changed my perception on life. and seeing them live is a life changeing experience. i still get chills to this day whem i remember the arena crowd singing everysong in unison. so make fun of tool fans if you will but they are loyal , understanding, openminded people that are probobly not as quik as you to point your finger.
I've been a TOOL fan since I was 8 when I first heard "Sober". Since then they have never dissappointed me. I seems that they went all the way back to their Opiate roots, but still seemed to mesh the experiemental rhythms and sounds ov Lateralus. You can't really compare 10000 days to Lateralus, it's like comparing Bob Dylan and the Wallflowers. Both are excellent in their own right.
To be honest, I think this band is almost too far ahead of it's time, which can bee a bad thing, as it's happened to Radiohead and My Bloody Valentine (check them out. Awsome music).

ive been listening to 10,000 days since the day its been released...until now...and perhaps for about a few months more...
Tool are the most musically, lyrically aand philosophoically profound metal acts of our time. I am proud to have entered into their twisted realm of rationale and perception of this sordid world, which they articulate through....their music. and fuck is it tight!
with context to your ' review' well...you can never get too old for music. if you love it...if it speaks to you, then age has no fucking implication into the equation.
however, your's propped up on the first page of reviews for 10,000 days when googled, so kudos for that.
Tool are behemoths in the pseudo commercialized fucked up world of music in the year 2006.
Honesty, power and intellect shines through on this record.
Themain contention of this work , is that of man's ever decadent state of refusla to elliviate himself from the clutches of circumastance that life cripples us in to. There is also that mention of hope... which is a beacon in all Tool's work. Even though its n teh form of death and of mourning, it talks about salvation and purpose.
My time is up. Tool rocks!
Keep the flag flying monkies!

I go to sleep singing TOOL songs in my head, I wake up and start back up. I dream of meeting Maynard. Messed up?? I think so, but i can't help it. They ar from another world, have to be!!
I hope they are aorund for another album. I am 32 and i loved them since Undertow. I will probably have to take medications if they ever stop making music.

Ok, Tool is one of the most influential *sp* and just kick ass bands of our time. When i was like 5 i heard Opiate for the first time and was just amazed! Been a hardcore fan ever since and will never not be one. 10,000 Days is just another landmark in Tool's kick ass reign of terror. May the live forever!

Let me fix my last post. I've put together Viginti and Wings in one channel (left?) and 10,000 days in the other channel (right?) and it all matches up and makes one crazy song. This is a trip!!! And the three faces on the album cover make it even more of a trip. Like a puzzle. Thanks to that poster at the beginning for pointing this out!
I've gotten a lot of responses about this combined track. Unfortunately I must pull it now because I can't keep up with the requests and bandwidth usage anymore. Also, I don't know how the band itself would feel about me giving away their music. Not that it was a huge amount of people or single tracks, but I do believe that music should be purchased and not illegally downloaded. And if any band deserved to get paid for their music, Tool is one of those bands. One of the only bands that's making good music these days. It's funny how on Wikipedia, they make reference to another band that helped change music and made a difference. Jane's Addiction. Looks like it takes a decade for someone to come along and really change things up in the industry.
So with that, I would ask that, if you can, please don't request this track anymore. I really don't even know if I got it right. I'd hate to do a disservice to such a creative bunch of people like those in the band Tool.

I am a Tool fan and have been listening to their music for about 10 years. I think that all of their albums are works of art. Their new album 10,000 days seems a bit sloppy. Their aren't enough vocals from Maynard and there is no structure to the music. Maybe I think this way b/c this 10,000 days is a departure from their previous albums in every way, but I have to say that the new album is my least favorite. "Vicarious", "The pot", and "Jambi" being the only three songs that stand out. Sorry to not be a cool aid drinker on this one, but I would say that 10,000 days is a decent album, not a great one.
The sheer genius of TOOL will not be fully appreciated for a long time. I am not what would be considered a devoted fan, I am simply a muso and I know brilliance when i hear it.

about couple of months ago, I was under the influence of Psychadelic drugs and heard a tool song...it ended something like ...." keeping you from carry on..." or something close to that...I can't find the lyrics for it anywhere...and I am feeling nicks on my temple ever since then...I have reduced taking drugs but can't get those lyrics out of my head..which song is that...please help me out...
well i am even more impressed by tool, first there was the message by maynards landlord at the end of disgustipated, then there was the hipe about them quitting, then salival, then lateralus' faaip de oaid, and now this. i got halfway through the puzzle, i caought on to 23 and all that, but i never thought that it was that obvious. it never occured to me, and the hints are all there.
Cool! Thanx for this post! I edited it to work perfectly. It's plain as day once you pointed out all the hints! That song always reminds me of viney plants growing as viewed in time elapsed cinematography.
I burned a separate copy with these combined tracks as one in place of Wings for Marie (pt1), and excluded the remaining two songs that its comprised of off of the rest of the album, it makes it a bit shorter on the whole but it helps reduce the mid album tedium that alot of people didn't like about this album.
Tool can't be fully appreciated unless experienced in a live setting. Every aspect of their sound is massively amplified as loud as i've ever heard music in my life but without any deterioration of their very deliberately crafted sound, and without once hurting my ears: they weren't even ringing immediately after the concert! They push as much sound as is possible through their respective tools (instruments, pedals, etc.) Their music is like a giant creature that bellows it's overwhelming presence, and their bizarre and macabre visual presentations loom over the audience only adding to this effect. The intricate and carefully arranged music at this point becomes even more impressive when you hear the precision with which they such heavy music so fluidly with each other. I will hold on to that experience for as long as i can, and look forward to an opportunity to experience this great band again.
Best show i've ever been to, period.
